Libraries: Community Treasures

A library is a wonderful source and resource for reading material. It can refer to a collection of books or a place which houses books. Libraries  are often privately owned or contain a collection of written material for public use. Different disciplines such as science or mathematics use libraries to store their published material.

A public library is important in every community. It offers resources for young and old in every strata of life. Students are the most popular guests in a library but adults like new mothers looking for information on how to raise children properly, young people on how to engage the business world, or those learning how to write an effective resume’ also make use of library facilities.

A source of recreation for young children, elderly and retired persons, these age groups can attend different activities and events sponsored by the library in their community where they can connect and meet others of like interests. These events range from scrapbook lessons, genealogy courses, book clubs, art projects and even movie nights. Younger children can enjoy story times and visits from guests who bring interesting materials and even animals!

In this age of technology where the internet is the connection highway of the century, those without a computer can log on at the library. All it takes is a library card readily offered by willing librarians. Most services are free and when there is a cost involved, it is usually minimal and affordable. So even though many households contain computers, libraries will continue to be community treasures for years to come.

The Modern Library

Libraries are amazing places. Gone are the days of the boring old building with a stern librarian insisting that everyone stay as quiet as a mouse while in the building.

Today, when you walk in you’ll be confronted with a very different world, one filled with computers and modern technology.

Back in the ancient World one of the seven wonders was the library in Alexandria. Built by a disciple of the great Aristotle and charged with the task of collecting the world’s knowledge into one place it’s a task that libraries seek to live up to today.

The modern library isn’t just a collection of knowledge though, using both modern and ancient tools they can and are used for research and education. Writing an article or essay on an historical event? The best place for  information is turn to the books that record it.  You’ll find them in a library.

With the advent of the digital age the library has received a new lease of life, instead of having to go and rent a DVD from the shop you can also head down to the library and often get the DVD out for a week for a fraction of the cost of renting.

Recreational reading is a major avenue for the library too with books costing so much today. Books are nice to look at on a shelf but if you’re only going to read them once then why not get them out of the library, read them and then give them back for only the cost of getting to the library

Use Your Library and Save

If you pay property taxes or rent, you are most likely helping to support your local public library. To get the most out of this investment, you should use the library. To obtain a book on any subject that interests you, check your library first. Your library can help you research home improvement, career advancement, hobbies, or any subject that interests you, without having to purchase expensive books. That’s free education! You can also meet your recreational reading needs, with the latest popular novels as well as timeless classics.

Libraries are not limited to books, either. DVD movies, CDs and other electronic media are provided for your use. If you want to study a new language while driving, get an audio-cassette or CD from the library and get started. Video materials are also available in an ever increasing variety and quantity in today’s libraries.

Online catalogues can be accessed from home, to tell you exactly what books (and other materials) are available. If your library system has more than one location, the catalogue will tell you which branches have copies. You can reserve items online using your library card, and even have them sent to the location that is most convenient for you. If an item is checked out to someone else, the library will reserve it and notify you by email when it becomes available.

You are already contributing to the library, so why not use their materials instead of purchasing your own copies of books or media you only need to read or watch once?
